Cover design | |||||
The cartooon on the front cover of the early drafts of the book was sketched by Hanna Lena Kovenock, while she was a high school senior in West Lafayette, Indiana, USA. [Unfortunately the publisher settled on a different cover design.] Hanna was given a theme and an idea for the design to work on. The related story follows. | |||||
Animals in the only remaining forest on the earth are scared. Most species are extinct. Those that remain are concerned about the human greed for everything, including oil. A meeting is called.
Hippo: We need to act. We must fight back with the humans, or die. I do not want to go like the beautiful Four-coloured flowerpecker. And, dear Elephant, many of your kind are on the endangered list. Elephant: But they have the weapons of mass animal destruction (WMAD). How can we fight? We have nothing other than us. As some say, we are the "low level" species, no brains. No creativity. We have not evolved. We live at their mercy. Mouse: Well, no point in brooding over lost cheese. I believe that you gals and guys have the muscle and I have the brain power to fight back. E: Yes, even though they have made jewels and other artifacts out of my ivory, I remain big and energetic." H: Yes, and I can take on at least a dozen humans in an instant. M: So, it seems that you all are with me! Then listen. The first thing we ought to do as animals, is to make chairs. I have seen human engineers and scientists sitting on chairs while they work. They use those blinking devices to make guns that kill us and large drilling machines that create chaos in a pure unadultrated zone. The chair seems to be an essential element in our fight against the humans. H: But who will make chairs? They are not meant for animals? Also, we cannot steal 'em from them. E: Yeah! How can I sit on a chair? M: Not to worry. I have been running around chairs ever since I was born. I know exactly how it looks and the requirements. Allow me to construct a prototype. H: Hah! Hah! You will construct a chair? For me, and for the elephant? And for the cows? Chickens will barely fit in your po-po-tipe! M: Okay, okay, enough of fun! Give me a chance and a contract! Don't you want to survive against the onslaught of WMADs? [The mouse is given a contract by the Hippo. In three months the mouse returns with a prototype chair.] H: Let me test it. This is going to break in one sitting. Your idea will never work. We are bound to be killed by those WMADs. [The hippo goes out and gets his test case, the Elephant, largest animal in the last remaining forest, the dinosaur of modern times.] E: Me, on this chair! Hah, hah! No way. What wood did you use? Did you go to Oregon or India to get the wood? All other strong wood seems to have vanished from the forests and is found in the homes of the WMAD owners! M: Try it my friend, this is a stress test. They also call it a load test. I have considered all possibilities, checked every corner of the chair, the back is strong, and the hand rests can hold steel. I have used the best of the remaining wood in the forest. [Scared, the elephant agrees to sit. He fits in with some difficulty, but the chair is able to take up the load. The mouse lets out a scream of success. The hippo is astonished and happy. He believes that the animals can now develop defense against WMADs. And so began the animal struggle against the human takeover of our beautiful planet.] |
