Updates to Chapter 10, "Elation in Tessellations",
in Hinged Dissections: Swinging & Twisting, by Greg N. Frederickson

Wobblier and wobblier for Lorraine

In the text I noted that the dissection of a Cross of Lorraine to a square in Figures 10.10 and 10.11 was unfortunately wobbly-hinged. But I seemed to imply no such problem for the dissection of a Cross of Lorraine to a Greek Cross in Figure 10.15. Unfortunately, the dissection does seem to need a wobbly hinge between the small square and the 7-sided piece.

And no abuts, please

I delivered the manuscript to the publisher at the end of June 2001, and then the race was on to see how long it would take to find an improvement that was too late to make it into the book. The honor was won in July with an improvement to the swing-hinged dissection of a dodecagon to a square. Unlike the dissection in Figures 10.17 and 10.19, the dissection below has no abutting hinges.
