Killian Receives Research Award from HP Labs

08-13-2012

Computer Science faculty member Charles Killian is the recipient of a sponsored research award from the fifth annual HP Labs Innovation Research Program (IRP). Killian’s award was one of 60 granted to research projects from around the world that are conducting collaborative research in a wide variety of disciplines, including cloud technology, health care, information analytics, and social media.

According to Chandrakant Patel, HP senior fellow and interim director of HP Labs, "HP Labs' ultimate goal is to bring value to HP through commercialization of our research. One of the ways we get there is by tapping into the wealth of knowledge from leading colleges, universities, and research institutes. Our academic colleagues contribute a diversity of perspective, new ideas and fresh approaches that strengthen our research. In return, we help educate the next generation of scientists and engineers."

Assistant Professor Charles Killian joined the Department of Computer Science in Fall 2008. The project that earned this HP Labs Innovation Research Award is within the HP Labs Theme Intelligent Infrastructure, which concerns the creation of ever-smarter, more secure computing architectures, networks, and storage solutions.

Titled MaceKen: Productively Programming Bulletproof Scalable Data Center Applications, this research project was also a 2011 HP Labs IRP recipient. In an effort to tackle the unprecedented challenges of scale, complexity, and reliability faced by next-generation data centers, Killian and his fellow researchers proposed a novel synthesis of scalable distributed systems construction methods and composable reliability techniques. In the project’s first year, the team completed the initial integration of the Mace distributed systems toolkit with the Ken distributed fault tolerance protocol. In the second year, their focus shifts to providing availability of protected systems using automated replication.

Congratulations to Professor Killian on this award!
