New Undergraduate Server Installed

08-20-2012

Over the summer, the Computer Science departmental facilities staff purchased and installed a new compute and file server for undergraduate use. The new machine, Data, replaces Lore as the primary file server for student home directories. More overall file space is available and a 1GB per-user file-system quota is activated to keep run-away file creation by one user from impacting other users. The new Data is running Linux on Intel hardware. (Lore runs Solaris on SPARC hardware.) Lore will continue to be available for applications using or requiring Solaris and/or the SPARC hardware architecture.

Data has two eight-core Intel Xeon E5-2650 processors running at 2GHZ, each with 20 MB of L3 cache. It also includes 96 GB of main memory and ten mirrored 600 GB SCSI drives (nearly 3 TB of user storage). Data is installed in the main departmental data center in LWSN 2133.
