The Intersection of Art and Science

For the next two years, the CS Department will be home for the “Intersection of Art and Science” Merging Reason and Emotion through Math and Computational Thinking.

The department will host a reception to welcome the art collection and celebrate the works of the artists who will be on display on Thursday, October 8 from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. in the exhibition space on the third floor of the Richard and Patricia Lawson Computer Science Building

This educational exhibition examines a wide range
of expressive approaches that emerge in the intersection of art, science, and technology. It is a joint collaboration between the Purdue Department of Computer Science and the Patti and Rusty Rueff School of Visual and Performing Arts at Purdue University.

Artists featured include Sergio Albiac, Anne Burns, Conan Chadbourne, Hans Dehlinger, Brian Evans, Richard Hassell and Patrick Bingham-Hall, John Arden Hiigli, So Yoon Lym, Gabriel Meyer, and Robert M. Spann.

The exhibition is curated by Tim Korb, former assistant head of the Department of Computer Science, and Petronio Bendito, internationally known artist and professor of art and design in the College of Liberal Arts.

Korb said the Lawson building has a history of hosting contemporary art, since it was built in 2006.

"One of the design goals for the Lawson Computer Science Building was to have attractive open spaces that would engage visitors and encourage communication and collaboration,” Korb said.  “The variety of art displays in the building contributes in important ways to that goal," he added.

Bendito (co-curator of the exhibit) is a new media artist, visual communications designer, color researcher, and digital culturalist. He has worked extensively in interdisciplinary projects and has collaborated with musicians, dancers, choreographers, a light designer, mathematicians and computer scientists. The art collection will remain at Lawson through December 22, 2017.
