Week 9: Growth Mindset in Action: From Words to Habits

Habits nurture lasting growth.

Objective: Students will learn how to transform growth mindset principles into practical habits by creating actionable plans and reflecting on their progress.

Why It Matters

A growth mindset isn’t just a concept—it’s a practice. By turning mindset mantras into habits, students can build resilience and confidence that permeate every aspect of their lives. Small daily actions lead to big, transformative changes over time.

Think about the athletes, scientists, and leaders who inspire us. Their success isn’t just about talent; it’s about the habits they develop to stay focused and improve every day. For example, Serena Williams practices the same serve thousands of times to perfect her form. Similarly, when students turn mantras into habits, they’re creating the foundation for long-term success.

Main Activities

Revisiting Mindset Mantras

  • Review mantras from previous weeks (e.g., "Step by step, we solve," or "Together, we can achieve more.").
  • Discussion prompt:
    • "Which mantra resonates with you the most and why?"

Creating a Habit Plan

  • Activity: Students select one mantra and brainstorm ways to live it out daily.
  • Example:

Mantra: "Big goals start with small steps."
Habit: Spend 5 minutes each day organizing a large task into smaller, actionable steps.

  • Provide a Habit Tracker template where students can outline their plan:

Mantra: Choose a focus mantra.

Actionable Habit: Define a simple daily action.

Why It Matters: Reflect on the habit’s potential impact.

Sharing and Encouragement

  • Students share their plans in small groups.
  • Encourage peer feedback:
    • "What do you like about this habit?"
    • "How might it help you stay consistent?"

Journal Prompt

"Write about a mantra you’ve chosen and how you plan to turn it into a habit. What steps will you take to stay consistent, and how do you think this habit will help you grow?"

Mindset Mantra

"Habits turn goals into growth."

Teacher’s Note

  • Share an example of how you turned a growth mindset principle into a habit in your life.
  • Encourage students to track their progress over the next few weeks and reflect on any changes they notice.
